Sassoon’s Long Journey
Al illustrated selection from Siegfried Sassoon’s ‘The Complete Memories of George Sherston’ Edited by Paul Fussell.
Siegfried Sassoon’s masterpiece Memoirs of a Fox-Hunting Man, Memoirs of an Infantry Officer and Sherston’s Progress has been expertly and sympathetically edited for this illustrated edition by Paul Fussell, whose book The Great War and Modern Memory is the unrivalled study of the literature of the First World War.
Professor Fussell has chosen a hundred pictures to illustrate Sassoon’s writing- poignant photographs of the hunting field and the battle front, drawings and paintings of the period, and pictures of Sassoon and his friends and contemporaries. In addition to an important Introduction and notes by Paul Fussell, the text of the book includes poems and a commentary on the public events and private circumstances of the time.
Sassoon’s Long Journey is a remarkable visual rendering of one of the classics of twentieth century autobiography.
